IMO, the child is too disrespectful to be considered "alpha". There's a difference between being assertive and being confrontational, and he crossed it as soon as he pushed his fingers into the older man's face. Besides, how would a "true" Alpha male react when confronted by a child? Should he strike the child (and risk the police dragging him to jail?) Or should he overwhelm the child (and risk offending the mother?) either action would result in another "good" man being taken from the woman's life.
@mamu- Yea he couldn't do much. Really the little boy came off as an alpha cause he guarded his territory against a more formidable opponent and white knighted his mom.
